Emporia Pro EV Charger: Is It a Good Choice for Maine Homes?

The Emporia Pro EV Charger is designed for homeowners who want fast Level 2 charging, smart scheduling and better control over their home’s electrical demand. Its PowerSmart technology can dynamically adjust charging based on the electricity being used throughout the home, which may help some homeowners install a charger without completing a costly electrical-service upgrade.

48A Maximum hardwired output

Fast Charging With Intelligent Load Management

The Emporia Pro can provide up to 48 amps of hardwired charging while its included energy-monitoring equipment tracks the home’s electrical demand and adjusts charging when necessary.

The Emporia Pro may be a good choice for homeowners who want:
  • Up to 48-amp hardwired Level 2 charging
  • Dynamic electrical-load management
  • Off-peak and scheduled charging
  • Whole-home energy monitoring
  • NACS or J1772 connector options
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Possible eligibility for Efficiency Maine’s current charger incentive

What Is the Emporia Pro EV Charger?

The Emporia Pro is a connected Level 2 home EV charger bundled with an Emporia Vue home energy monitor and PowerSmart load-management software. The charger and energy monitor communicate so the system can see how much electricity the home is using and adjust the vehicle’s charging rate accordingly.

Unlike a charger that operates at one unrestricted setting whenever it is connected, the Emporia Pro can reserve available electrical capacity for the vehicle without allowing the total monitored load to exceed the configured service limit.

⚡

Level 2 Charging

The hardwired version supports up to 48 amps at 240 volts, while the plug-in NEMA 14-50 configuration is limited to a maximum of 40 amps.

↕

PowerSmart Control

Charging output can rise or fall according to the power available after the home’s other electrical demands are considered.

⌂

Home Energy Monitoring

The included Vue monitor measures the home’s electricity use and supplies the information used by the PowerSmart system.

◷

Smart Scheduling

Homeowners can schedule charging, monitor energy use and manage charging activity through Emporia’s connected platform.

How Does PowerSmart Dynamic Load Management Work?

PowerSmart uses information from the Emporia Vue energy monitor installed in the electrical panel. The monitor measures real-time household demand, while the software controls how much power the EV charger is permitted to use.

For example, a home may have sufficient capacity for faster vehicle charging when major appliances are off. If an electric range, dryer, water heater or other large load turns on, PowerSmart can temporarily reduce the charging rate. When household demand falls, more available capacity can be directed back to the charger.

Dynamic load management does not create additional electrical capacity. It manages when and how the existing capacity is used. The electrical service, panel, dedicated charging circuit and configured settings must still be professionally evaluated and installed.

Can the Emporia Pro Avoid a Panel Upgrade?

In some homes, yes. Dynamic load management may provide an alternative when the existing electrical service cannot support an unrestricted 48-amp charging load in addition to every other possible household load.

However, it does not solve every electrical-panel problem. An upgrade may still be appropriate if the equipment is damaged, obsolete, improperly configured, undersized for the home’s broader needs or lacks a safe way to add the required charging circuit.

Before deciding, an electrician should evaluate:

  • The electrical-service rating
  • The panel’s condition and available breaker space
  • The home’s calculated electrical load
  • The desired EV charging rate
  • Future electrical upgrades or additional vehicles
  • The required charger and energy-monitoring equipment

If a panel upgrade is being considered, review BANN’s electrical panel upgrade services .

Emporia Pro Charging Speed and Circuit Requirements

Emporia currently lists a maximum output of 48 amps for a hardwired installation and 40 amps for the NEMA 14-50 plug-in version. The actual charging speed also depends on how much AC power the vehicle can accept.

Configuration Maximum Output Typical Dedicated Circuit Maximum Power at 240V
Hardwired 48 amps 60-amp, two-pole circuit 11.5 kW
NEMA 14-50 plug-in 40 amps 50-amp, two-pole circuit 9.6 kW

Maximum output is not always the best or necessary choice. A lower configured charging rate may comfortably replace a homeowner’s normal daily driving while reducing the demand placed on the electrical system.

Hardwired vs. Plug-In Emporia Pro

The Emporia Pro is available in hardwired and NEMA 14-50 plug-in configurations. The best option depends on the desired charging output, portability and applicable electrical requirements.

Consideration Hardwired NEMA 14-50 Plug-In
Maximum output Up to 48 amps Up to 40 amps
Connection Directly connected to its dedicated circuit Connected through an approved 240-volt receptacle
Portability Permanent installation Can be unplugged and relocated
Receptacle required No Yes—continuous-duty equipment is important
Common fit Permanent home charging and maximum available output Homeowners who value portability and have a suitable outlet installation
Not every NEMA 14-50 outlet is appropriate for daily EV charging. Vehicle charging creates a sustained electrical load for hours at a time. The receptacle, conductors, breaker, enclosure and connections must be suitable for that use and installed according to current requirements.

NACS or J1772: Which Connector Should You Choose?

The Emporia Pro is available with different vehicle connectors. Choose the version that matches the charging inlet on your vehicle.

  • NACS: Commonly associated with Tesla vehicles and increasingly used by other vehicle manufacturers
  • J1772: Used for Level 2 charging by many non-Tesla electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles

Adapters may be available for certain vehicles, but selecting the correct native connector can make everyday charging simpler. Confirm your present vehicle and any planned future vehicle before ordering.

Efficiency Maine’s Current $400 Charger Incentive

Efficiency Maine currently offers up to $400 in savings on eligible off-peak chargers purchased through its program process. The savings are divided into two separate parts:

Incentive How It Works When It Is Received
$200 equipment discount Request a single-use Efficiency Maine code and apply it through the program’s linked Emporia store. At checkout
$200 setup bonus Install the charger in Maine, connect it to the internet and complete mobile-app setup within six months. Efficiency Maine states that a check is mailed after activation is reported

The charger must be shipped to and installed at a Maine address. Efficiency Maine currently limits the discount to two chargers per residential or business address.

Obtain the discount code before purchasing. Do not assume that an Emporia charger purchased through another seller will qualify. Follow Efficiency Maine’s current ordering process and verify the eligible model before checkout.

How Off-Peak Charging Works

Chargers purchased through Efficiency Maine’s current off-peak program automatically pause charging between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. Charging outside those hours helps move demand away from periods when the electrical grid is more heavily loaded.

If charging is needed during the peak period, Efficiency Maine says the homeowner can override the default for that day. The off-peak schedule returns the following day and cannot be permanently disabled on the program charger.

Off-peak scheduling and PowerSmart serve different purposes:

  • Off-peak scheduling controls when charging normally occurs
  • PowerSmart controls charging output based on real-time electrical demand inside the home

What Is Included With the Emporia Pro?

According to Emporia’s current product information, the Pro package includes the EV charger, a 25-foot charging cable, a Vue home energy monitor, whole-home current sensors, PowerSmart software and mounting hardware.

The energy monitor must be properly installed in the electrical panel and configured for the home’s actual service rating. Installing the charger alone without completing the energy-monitoring and software setup would not provide the intended PowerSmart operation.

What a Professional Installation Involves

Evaluate the Home’s Electrical System

The service rating, panel condition, breaker space and household demand are reviewed before selecting the circuit and charging configuration.

Plan the Charger Location

The installation accounts for the vehicle’s charging port, cable reach, weather exposure, Wi-Fi reception and distance from the electrical panel.
